Happy Festivus, Seinfeld fans! By now your Festivus Pole is up and you are busy preparing for the Feats of Strength and The Airing of Grievances.
Some of you may already have procured ingredients for your Festivus dinner. Stuff like meat for the meatloaf, and enough shrimps to dry up the ocean. But others may wish to celebrate by eating out on this joyous occasion (still do the Airing of Grievances at home, though).
Unfortunately, December 23rd falls on Monday this year and many restaurants are typically closed on Mondays. Oh no! But, guess what? Festivus miracles are real! The following restaurants are actually open on Festivus.
PLEASE NOTE: Each establishment is listed as open on their website; but, just to be safe, please give them a call or check out their Facebook page before heading out.
Think playful pub food with a seasonal influence, and 15 rotating taps of local and nearby craft beers. The Ace Burger menu is a must, and the entire food offering is meant to be washed down with the beer or cider on tap. In the summer, check out the hidden courtyard patio.
Chef Craig Flinn raised the bar on dining in Halifax when he created Chives in 2001. Since then he has kept standards high, with fresh seafood, and farm-forward cooking served in an elegant bistro-style setting. If you’re dining with someone special, or want an intimate experience, request “the vault.”
Formerly on the Halifax waterfront, the new location for the Gahan House is in the middle of busy downtown. Here, good honest pub food is paired with handcrafted ales, plus a rotating selection of oysters from throughout the Maritimes. For something different, try the Daily Dose—Gahan’s hard root beer.
Elevated and innovative, but not overly trendy, the menu at Gio consistently impresses on all aspects—imagination, execution and presentation. The dining experience is polished yet approachable and the service is arguably one of the best in Halifax. The cocktails and wine list are as well-curated as the food, and the interior is lovely.
A contemporary restaurant in the spacious lobby of the Marriott Harbourfront, this does not feel like your typical hotel dining room. Their all-day menu that starts at 11:30 a.m. has a strong focus on seafood entrées, but also offers fresh oysters and a playful list of shareables.
A thriving Italian restaurant in residential Bedford, Il Mercato continues to serve consistent, satisfying food for 15 years now. Rustic Italian dishes like pizza, focaccia and handmade pasta are stars, but a list of hearty meat and seafood-based entrées ensure there’s something for the whole family, on every visit.
Sophisticated with a New York vibe, the kitchen of this tiny wine bar and restaurant is always in good hands. An ever-changing tapas-style menu is the perfect accompaniment to a staggering section of imported wines and craft cocktails, navigated by truly passionate bar staff.
