Sumthin’ new from the folks at Black Sheep and Good Robot
If you live in the north end, you have likely been to (or at least heard of) Good Robot Brewing. It hasn’t been around all that long but has become an institution. What makes it so special? Their commitment to serving up good times, inclusively. Everyone is welcome at Good Robot, including dogs and parakeets. It’s a real neighbourhood destination. Oh yeah, and there’s beer.
What it hasn’t been, up until now, is a dining destination. Don’t get us wrong, the previous food program was good fun. The rotation of T Dogs, Backoos, and Black Sheep was enjoyable, but there’s only so much you can do with a tiny bar-side kitchen and deep fryer. The Good Robot crew knew this and decided it was time to build a proper kitchen and offer customers a full menu. They realized that it made sense for them to find a single partner to run their food program. And so they did. Enter RumbleFish.
RumbleFish is the creation of John House and Dave Woodley, the talented duo behind Black Sheep. One of the guest kitchens formerly in the rotation, they now find themselves with a more permanent gig, and they’re bringing something different to the table. Which we were happy to discover at their soft launch in mid-August.
As far as menus go, we were immediately impressed. A significant Asian influence is rounded out by dishes like Duck Confit & Polenta Fries, Chorizo Burgers, and Hand Pies. The mix is solid. Prices are good. Items range from $5.50 to $18.00, with most hitting the $8.50 to $12.00 bracket, placing RumbleFish in the everyday eats territory.
On our visit, we tried the Jerk Chicken Thighs, Buffalo Cauliflower, Quinoa & Kale Salad, Butt Sandwich, and the Poke Bowl. Each was delicious, and although it was only their soft open, the food was surprisingly resolved.
Since that first visit, RumbleFish launched a hot, new brunch program. A noteworthy addition, in large part because brunch is the duo’s specialty. Brunch-goers can expect things like Chickpea Pancakes, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Pork Butt Benny, Rösti & Smoked Salmon, and Chorizo & Sweet Potato Hash. Makes you want some right now, doesn’t it?
It’s up to you really. Brunch, lunch, dinner – the choice is yours. All in all, we loved Rumblefish and look forward to visiting again.
