WE’RE LOOKING FOR FOODIES TO JOIN OUR JUDGES PANEL
With 2019 just a few months away, we’re putting out the call for good people to help us rate more than 150 establishments for our annual 25 Best Places to Eat special edition – scheduled for release on March 1, 2019.
Getting the right number and right mix of judges is hugely important, and we are dedicating the next months to find people with the right stuff.
What is the right stuff? Actually, it’s a number of things.
The first? Experience. We want folks who have dined out at least 50 times in 2018. Experience, in our view, helps create a better context for individual ratings and returns more accurate data.
The second? Location. This magazine represents urban Halifax, Annapolis Valley, and the South Shore exclusively, so judges must understand we only rate establishments in these areas. While this may change in future years, that’s not the case for the 2019 list.
The third? Objectivity. It’s critical our judges be able to put aside friendships and rivalries during the judging process. We have safeguards to help protect against overt subjectivity, but we’d rather not have to use them.
The fourth, and final need? Balance. It’s fine to prefer one style of dining over another, but there is a big difference between preference and being one dimensional. This magazine represents all categories, from take-out to fine dining, so we need judges who understand and appreciate the full spectrum on offer.
It’s important to also note that as a judge, you will only be rating establishments dined at in 2018.
PROGRAM CHANGES FOR 2O19
On top of increasing the number of judges, there will also be other changes to our 25 Best Places to Eat program. Most noteworthy is the decision to split next year’s list into two categories, according to price point. So, next March the special edition will feature two 25 Best Places to Eat lists: one for establishments with an average entrée price up to $20 and the other for prices $20 and over. This split will better recognize the extra effort required for fine dining and make it easier for readers to navigate their options. We will also be introducing a star system, to further separate everyday eateries from special occasion dining destinations.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Adding even more excitement to next year’s 25 Best is our introduction of a Lifetime Achievement Award. This is where those extra judges will really come in handy – helping us sort through dozens of would-be candidates. It’ll be a game of catch-up, likely lasting a decade, as so many deserve recognition.
NOW ACCEPTING APPLICANTS
So, if you’ve read the above and want to take part, you can start by sending us an email (25Best@curatedmagazine.ca) with the subject line “Experienced Diners Wanted”. Next, we will send you a brief questionnaire, to help determine whether you have what we’re looking for. Our goal is 40 judges, which means space for just 20 more. Thank you in advance for taking the time to reach out!
